Wireless carrier Sprint recently announced that Sierra Wireless will launch the first mobile device to combine 4G LTE and WiMAX connectivity with its 4G LTE Tri-Fi Hotspot beginning on May 18.

Wireless carrier Sprint recently announced that Sierra Wireless will launch the first mobile device to combine 4G LTE and WiMAX connectivity with its 4G LTE Tri-Fi Hotspot beginning on May 18.

According to the announcement, the Sierra Wireless 4G LTE Tri-Fi Hotspot for the Sprint Network will deliver improved speeds and coverage to Sprint's consumer base. The new platform will help families, businesses and employees achieve high-speed connections.

The solution will be available for approximately $100 with a two-year contract and $50 rebate. The Tri-Fi Hotspot supports up to eight Wi-Fi devices, including gaming consoles, music players and cameras, among others.

"Sprint and Sierra Wireless are once again giving customers the flexibility to enjoy 4G performance in any Sprint 4G WiMAX market along with our upcoming 4G LTE markets or Sprint’s reliable 3G network when outside a 4G area," noted Sprint product development vice president David Owens. "Sierra Wireless Tri-Fi Hotspot combines simplicity with compact portability and security to make it ideal for both personal and business use in a variety of situations."

Sprint has continued to develop new options for its consumer base and it appears to be paying off. The wireless carrier recently announced that despite a first quarter net loss of $863 million, its total number of customers grew by almost 4 percent from the first quarter of 2011. Overall, 263,000 postpaid, 785,000 wholesale and affiliate and 870,000 prepaid subscribers were added during the period.

With Sprint's subscriber base on the rise, this presents a golden opportunity for third-party resellers looking to boost their own sales. With wireless billing software, for example, vendors can improve their customer retention rates and ensure their profits are always growing.

Wireless provider Sprint hopes to bring high-end smartphones into the hands of avid consumers by releasing the HTC Evo V 4G on Virgin Mobile and the HTC Design 4G on Boost Mobile.

Wireless provider Sprint hopes to bring high-end smartphones into the hands of avid consumers by releasing the HTC Evo V 4G on Virgin Mobile and the HTC Design 4G on Boost Mobile. However, according to the Verge's Dieter Bohn, this development is not new for the nation's third-largest wireless carrier.

"Both are Sprint devices that are being brought down to the pre-paid MVNO in a move that Sprint says is a part of a new trend where it will move top-tier devices into the low-range on pre-paid once they've spent some time in the market," Bohn wrote. "Both phones are identical to what we remember and frankly, they seem like they should have a pretty good shot as they were devices that perhaps flew under the radar a bit in their original life."

Bohn added that Sprint is banking on the Evo V 4G for consumers seeking a high-end device because this is particularly the demographic found on Virgin, as opposed to Boost.

Both smartphones will feature Ice Cream Sandwich, the latest version of the Android operating system, as well as HTC's Sense overlay. The devices are expected to launch on May 31.

Sprint has identified pre-paid offerings as key to the evolution of the MVNO platform, and experts agree that effective MVNO software will be crucial as the industry evolves.

FierceWireless writer Phil Goldstein recently discussed the MVNO industry and how some companies, such as Sprint, are impacting the U.S. market. Several MVNO carriers, such as Ting and Republic Wireless, are benefiting from Sprint's support in this field, with the former gaining recognition in November 2011 for its unlimited voice, text and web service deal.

A mobility solutions vendor recently conducted a survey of more than 450 companies to gauge certain business habits regarding thousands of mobile users. As it turns out, many organizations are facing serious spending issues regarding their wireless billing.

According to the vendor, the study analyzed more than 550,000 devices from the companies, which ranged from only 35 employees to almost 35,000. The average business spends nearly $852,000 per year for their wireless bills. Each staff member costs their organizations approximately $1,235 annually and some of this is for unauthorized downloads and misuse of text, data and services, among others.

Researchers, who referred to this activity as "bad spend," noted that this practice "is very common across businesses and results from the lack of resources with which to manage mobility, a lack of institutionalized wireless policies and the inherent difficulty of interpreting enterprise-level carrier bills."

Since wireless is such an integral part of businesses nowadays, spending carelessly can significantly harm an organizations' bottom line. Companies looking to improve their operations, ensure their billing is on track and within budget and ensure customer retention rates remain high should look to wireless billing software from BeQuick.
